Vätskeunderskott

Vätskeunderskott, also known as dehydration, refers to a condition where the body loses more fluid than it takes in. This imbalance disrupts normal bodily functions. The primary causes of vätskeunderskott are insufficient fluid intake, excessive fluid loss through sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, or increased urination. Symptoms can vary depending on the severity and can include thirst, dry mouth, reduced urine output, fatigue, dizziness, and confusion. In severe cases, it can lead to serious complications such as heatstroke, kidney problems, and seizures.

The body's fluid balance is crucial for maintaining blood volume, regulating body temperature, and transporting nutrients. When fluid levels drop, these processes can be compromised. Infants and the elderly are particularly susceptible to vätskeunderskott due to their limited ability to communicate thirst or regulate fluid balance effectively.

Preventing vätskeunderskott involves ensuring adequate fluid intake throughout the day, especially during hot weather or periods of strenuous physical activity. Consuming water, diluted juices, or electrolyte-rich beverages can help. For individuals experiencing vomiting or diarrhea, it is important to replace lost fluids and electrolytes promptly. Medical attention is recommended if symptoms are severe or do not improve with fluid replacement. Treatment typically involves rehydration, either orally or intravenously, depending on the severity of the condition.
