Väsimuskindlus refers to the ability of a material to withstand repeated cycles of stress without failing. This phenomenon is crucial in engineering design, particularly for components subjected to fluctuating loads over their lifespan. When a material is subjected to stress, microscopic damage can accumulate with each cycle. This damage, often in the form of small cracks, can propagate over time. If the stress levels are below the material's ultimate tensile strength, it can still fail if these stress cycles are repeated enough times. This type of failure is known as fatigue failure.

The resistance to such failure is quantified by a material's fatigue strength or endurance limit. Fatigue strength is the maximum stress a material can withstand for a specific number of cycles, while the endurance limit is the stress level below which a material can theoretically withstand an infinite number of cycles without failing.
