Värähtelyeristimet, known in English as vibration isolators or vibration dampeners, are devices designed to reduce the transmission of vibration and shock from one object to another. They are commonly used in a wide range of applications, from industrial machinery and vehicles to sensitive electronic equipment and buildings. The primary function of a vibration isolator is to absorb or dissipate the energy of unwanted vibrations, thereby protecting the structure or equipment from damage, reducing noise levels, and improving performance.

The principle behind vibration isolation relies on introducing a flexible element between the source of vibration and the object to be protected. This flexible element, often made of materials like rubber, metal springs, or specialized polymers, has its own natural frequency. When the frequency of the incoming vibration is significantly higher than the natural frequency of the isolator, the isolator effectively dampens the vibration. Conversely, if the vibration frequency is close to the isolator's natural frequency, resonance can occur, amplifying the vibration, so proper selection of the isolator is crucial.

Vibration isolators are categorized based on their design and the type of material used. Common types include elastomeric isolators, which utilize the elastic properties of rubber or similar materials, and spring isolators, which employ mechanical springs. Air springs, using compressed air, are also used for applications requiring high levels of isolation and adjustability. The effectiveness of a vibration isolator is determined by its stiffness and damping characteristics, which are chosen based on the specific application requirements, including the mass of the equipment to be isolated and the expected vibration frequencies.
