Värvikõverate, a term derived from Estonian, refers to color curves, a fundamental concept in digital image editing and color management. These curves are graphical representations used to adjust the tonal range and color balance of an image. Essentially, they map the input values of a color channel (such as red, green, blue, or luminance) to output values.

The horizontal axis of a color curve typically represents the original brightness levels of the image, ranging from pure black on the left to pure white on the right. The vertical axis represents the new, adjusted brightness levels. A straight diagonal line from the bottom left to the top right indicates no change in brightness. By manipulating this line, users can make specific areas of the image brighter or darker. For instance, pulling a point on the curve upwards will brighten the corresponding tonal range, while pulling it downwards will darken it.

Color curves can also be used to adjust color saturation and hue. In many editing programs, they are applied on a channel-by-channel basis. Adjusting the red curve, for example, affects the intensity of red in the image. This allows for precise control over the color cast and overall mood of a photograph or graphic. Advanced users can create complex curves with multiple points to achieve specific artistic effects or to correct color inaccuracies.
