Värvieraldus, also known as color separation, is a fundamental process in printing and digital imaging. It involves decomposing a full-color image into its constituent primary colors. In traditional offset printing, this typically means creating separate plates for cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK). Each of these plates carries the information for a specific color, and when overlaid in precise registration during the printing process, they combine to reproduce the original full-color image.

The process begins with scanning a color image or receiving a digital file. This image data is then analyzed by specialized software. Algorithms determine the appropriate dot patterns and densities for each of the primary colors to represent the original hues. For instance, a bright red area in the original image would require a significant amount of magenta and yellow ink, with little to no cyan or black. Conversely, a dark blue would necessitate a large amount of cyan and a smaller amount of magenta.

Digital photography and display technologies also utilize a form of color separation. Digital cameras capture light and translate it into electrical signals, which are then processed to create color information. Displays, such as LCD or OLED screens, use sub-pixels of red, green, and blue (RGB) to generate the illusion of a full spectrum of colors by emitting varying intensities of light.
