Värviedastusvõime, often translated as Color Rendering Index (CRI), is a quantitative measure of a light source's ability to reproduce the colors of various objects faithfully compared to an ideal or natural light source. It is a crucial metric in lighting design, particularly in applications where accurate color perception is important, such as art galleries, retail stores, and photography studios.

The CRI scale ranges from 0 to 100, with 100 representing perfect color rendering, similar to that of a blackbody radiator at the same correlated color temperature. A higher CRI value indicates that the light source is better at revealing the true colors of illuminated objects. Lower CRI values mean that the light source may distort or mute the colors, making them appear different from how they would look under natural daylight.

The measurement of CRI involves comparing the spectral power distribution of the light source in question with that of a reference illuminant. The system uses a set of eight standardized color samples, known as the Munsell colors. The degree to which the appearance of these colors differs under the test light source compared to the reference illuminant is used to calculate the CRI. While the general CRI (Ra) is an average of these eight samples, more specific color rendering indices (R1-R9) can be used to assess the rendering of individual colors. Generally, a CRI of 80 or above is considered good for most applications, with values above 90 being excellent.
