Värinäköhäiriöt, colloquially known as color blindness, are conditions characterized by an impaired ability to perceive differences in color. The most common form is red-green color blindness, where individuals have difficulty distinguishing between red and green hues. Other forms include blue-yellow color blindness and, much more rarely, achromatopsia, a complete absence of color vision.

These conditions are typically inherited, with the genes responsible located on the X chromosome, making them more prevalent in males. Acquired color vision deficiencies can also occur due to various factors such as aging, certain diseases like glaucoma or macular degeneration, and exposure to specific medications or chemicals.

Diagnosis is usually made through standardized color vision tests, such as the Ishihara plates, which present patterns of colored dots that form numbers or shapes visible only to individuals with normal color perception.

While there is no cure for inherited color blindness, individuals can learn to adapt and cope with their condition. Specialized lenses and apps exist that can aid in distinguishing certain colors. Understanding the specific type of color vision deficiency is crucial for effective management and for making informed choices regarding career paths or daily activities.
