Väravad

Väravad is the Estonian word for goals scored in sports, most often used in football (soccer) and other score-based games. The plural form väravad refers to the number of goals by a team or a player in a match, a competition, or a season. In match reports and statistics, väravad are the primary measure of offensive performance.

In practice, a game’s final score is expressed with the number of väravad for each side. For example, a 2–1 result indicates that the first team scored two väravad and the second team one. Goals can come from open play, set pieces, or penalties. A goal credited to the attacking team may be described simply as a värav; if a goal is scored for the opposing team as an own goal, it is referred to as an omavärav and counts for the other side’s väravad.

Statistics and records around väravad are used to assess teams and players over a season. The player who scores the most väravad in a competition is often called the top scorer or, in Estonian, a väravakütt. League standings, club records, and prize awards frequently rely on the total number of väravad to gauge offensive success.

Usage notes: väravad is primarily encountered in Estonian sports discourse and media. In non-sports contexts, the term is uncommon, and the concept is typically translated as “goals” in English-language summaries or reports.
