Väljahingab

Väljahingab is an Estonian word that translates to "exhales" in English. It refers to the act of breathing out, the process by which air is expelled from the lungs. This is a fundamental physiological process essential for life, occurring in conjunction with inhalation, the act of breathing in. Together, these two phases constitute a single breath cycle.

During exhalation, the diaphragm, a large muscle located at the base of the chest cavity, relaxes and moves upward. Concurrently, the intercostal muscles, which are located between the ribs, also relax, allowing the rib cage to move downward and inward. These actions decrease the volume of the thoracic cavity, increasing the pressure within the lungs. Consequently, air, rich in carbon dioxide and other waste products, is forced out of the body.

Väljahingab is also used metaphorically in Estonian to describe the release of something, such as emotions or tension. For instance, someone might "väljahingab" their worries, signifying a sense of relief or letting go. The word can also be used in a more literal sense to describe the expulsion of smoke or other substances from the mouth or lungs. The physiological process of väljahingab is involuntary, but it can also be consciously controlled to some extent, as in controlled breathing exercises or singing.
