Väljaannetest, commonly referred to in English as release testing, is a software quality assurance activity that validates a software build before it is released to users. Its purpose is to determine whether the product meets its defined release criteria, functions correctly in realistic environments, and is ready for public use. Release testing focuses on the final version and considers how the product behaves as a whole rather than testing individual components in isolation.

The scope of väljaannetest typically includes end-to-end business processes, installation and setup, upgrade and downgrade paths, data migration, and compatibility across supported platforms, browsers, devices, or operating systems. It also covers non-functional aspects such as performance, reliability, security, usability, accessibility, and localization. The environment for release testing is usually a staging or production-like setup that mirrors production to ensure findings are representative.

Process and execution involve planning and risk-based test design, executing predefined test cases and exploratory testing, and documenting defects for resolution. Release criteria, or go/no-go criteria, are established in advance and may include a target test coverage level, acceptable defect thresholds, build stability, and completeness of release documentation. Upon completion, QA and stakeholders decide whether the build is ready for release or requires additional fixes and retesting.

Release testing is distinct from external beta testing or broader user acceptance testing, though findings may feed into those activities. Its outcome directly influences release decisions, aiming to reduce post-release defects and ensure a smooth deployment and user experience.
