Välityspuolina

Välityspuolina, also known as a relay race baton, is a cylindrical object used in relay races to transfer the baton from one runner to another without direct contact. The term originates from the Finnish word "välitys," meaning "relay," and "puolina," which refers to the baton itself. In track and field, the baton plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth transition of leadership between runners in a team event.

The standard relay baton is typically made of lightweight materials such as aluminum or carbon fiber to minimize weight while maintaining durability. It usually measures between 28 and 30 centimeters in length and has a diameter of about 3.5 centimeters. The baton is designed to be easily gripped and passed between runners during the exchange zone, which is a designated area where the handoff must occur.

In competitive relay races, such as the 4x100 meters or 4x400 meters events, the baton exchange must follow strict rules to prevent disqualification. The passing runner must release the baton before entering the exchange zone, and the receiving runner must secure it before exiting the zone. Improper handling, such as dropping the baton or passing it outside the exchange zone, results in penalties.

Välityspuolina is not only used in traditional track and field relay races but also appears in other sports and relay-based competitions. Its design and function emphasize efficiency, coordination, and teamwork, making it a fundamental component of relay racing.
