Vurmal

Vurmal is a fictional city in the fantasy setting used in speculative fiction and role-playing works. It serves as the capital of the Vural Province in the northern highlands of the realm of Arindor, located at the confluence of the Vorn River and the Silver Way. The city sits at about 350 meters above sea level and experiences a cool temperate climate with long, snowy winters.

Its history begins in the early expansion era, when Valun traders settled there to control river traffic. Vurmal developed as a mercantile hub and fortress, defending the valley from raiders and rival provinces. During the War of the North in the late medieval era, the city endured two sieges and was rebuilt with thicker ramparts. In the modern era, municipal reforms expanded civic services and formalized guilds.

Today, Vurmal is governed by a magistrate and a council with representation from major guilds and districts. The population is around 42,000, including native Vurmali, Nordish migrants, and visiting merchants. The official language is Vurmali, with Nordish and Common used in commerce and diplomacy.

Its economy centers on river trade, timber, ironworks, and crafts. The river port handles grain and timber exports; a rail line connected to the regional capital in the late 19th century expanded freight and passenger service. The city hosts a weekly market and a district of artisans.

Notable landmarks include the Marrow Gate, the Crown Market, and the Lumen Cathedral. The Midwinter Procession is a major annual festival featuring lights, songs, and street performances.
