Vundu

Vundu is a large, air-breathing catfish found in the Zambezi River basin of southeastern Africa. Scientifically known as *Clarias gariepinus*, it is a species of order Siluriformes and family Clariidae. Vundu are characterized by their elongated bodies, flattened heads, and four barbels around their mouths. They possess a superior mouth and can live for extended periods out of water due to their accessory breathing organs.

These fish are opportunistic omnivores and scavengers, feeding on a variety of prey including smaller fish, crustaceans, insects, and even carrion. Vundu are important in their ecosystem and are also a significant food source for local communities. They are highly prized for their meat, which is firm and white. Due to their size, they are sought after by both subsistence and sport anglers.

Vundu are known to tolerate a wide range of water conditions, including low oxygen levels, which contributes to their success in various freshwater habitats within their native range. They are found in rivers, lakes, and swamps. Reproduction typically occurs during the rainy season, with females laying eggs that are then fertilized by males. The species faces some conservation concerns due to overfishing and habitat degradation in certain areas.
