Vulkanisaatioon
Vulkanisaatioon is a Finnish term referring to the process of vulcanization. Vulcanization is a chemical process used to convert natural rubber or related polymers into more durable materials by adding sulfur or other equivalent curatives or accelerators. This process involves heating the rubber with sulfur, often under pressure, which creates cross-links between polymer chains. These cross-links significantly improve the rubber's tensile strength, elasticity, and resistance to abrasion and weathering. Without vulcanization, rubber would be soft, sticky in warm weather, and brittle in cold weather, making it unsuitable for most applications. The discovery of vulcanization by Charles Goodyear in 1839 revolutionized the use of rubber, enabling its widespread adoption in industries such as tire manufacturing, footwear, and industrial components. The specific properties of the vulcanized rubber can be tailored by adjusting the type and amount of vulcanizing agent, as well as the addition of accelerators and activators. This controlled cross-linking process transforms a relatively unstable material into a robust and versatile elastomer.
