Vulkaanitoiminnot, or volcanic activity, refers to the various processes and phenomena associated with volcanoes. This activity is driven by the movement of magma, which is molten rock from the Earth's mantle, towards the surface. When magma reaches the surface, it is called lava. Volcanic activity can be categorized into two main types: effusive and explosive.

Effusive volcanic activity is characterized by the gentle release of lava, often forming lava flows or domes. This type of activity is typically associated with basaltic magma, which is low in gas content and has a low viscosity. Effusive eruptions can create vast lava fields and are often less hazardous than explosive eruptions.

Explosive volcanic activity, on the other hand, involves the violent release of magma, ash, and other volcanic materials. This type of activity is often associated with andesitic or rhyolitic magma, which is high in gas content and has a high viscosity. Explosive eruptions can generate pyroclastic flows, lahars, and ashfall, which can pose significant hazards to nearby populations.

Volcanic activity can also include non-eruptive processes such as fumarolic activity, where hot gases are released from the volcano, and hydrothermal activity, where hot water and steam are released. These processes can create unique landscapes and ecosystems, such as geysers and hot springs.

Volcanic activity is closely monitored by scientists to assess potential hazards and to provide early warnings to affected populations. The study of volcanic activity, known as volcanology, involves the analysis of volcanic deposits, the monitoring of volcanic activity, and the development of models to predict future eruptions.
