Vuilwaterput

A "vuilwaterput," also known as a septic tank or cesspit, is a type of underground containment system used to manage and treat wastewater from households or small communities. It is designed to collect, store, and partially treat domestic sewage before it is either safely disposed of or further processed.

Typically constructed from concrete, plastic, or fiberglass, a vuilwaterput is buried below ground level, with inlet and outlet pipes allowing wastewater to flow in and effluent to exit. The primary purpose of this system is to facilitate the natural breakdown of organic material through anaerobic bacteria, reducing the pollutant load before the effluent is released into the environment.

Vuilwaterput systems are common in rural or areas lacking access to centralized sewage treatment facilities, though they require regular maintenance. Pumping or emptying is necessary to remove accumulated sludge and prevent system failure or groundwater contamination.
