Vortexmixer

Vortexmixer, commonly called a vortex mixer or vortexer, is a laboratory device designed to mix small volumes of liquid by generating rapid, circular motion at the liquid surface. A motor drives a platform or attachment that transfers motion to tubes or tube adapters, creating a vortex that mixes contents without manual agitation. Vortex mixers are widely used in biology, chemistry, and clinical laboratories to resuspend pellets, mix reagents, and prepare samples for further processing.

Most models provide adjustable speed, measured in revolutions per minute (rpm), and some allow control of the mixing amplitude or orbit diameter. The user places one or more tubes on a small raised platform or in a cup-head attachment; the platform's motion causes the liquid to swirl inside the tube. Common tube sizes include 0.2 to 2.0 milliliters in microcentrifuge tubes, as well as larger tubes with compatible adapters. Some units support 24- or 96-well plate adapters, enabling simultaneous mixing of multiple samples.

Vortex mixers come in orbital designs, where the platform moves in a circular orbit, and in models that use a linear or rocking motion. Attachments such as tube clamps, cup heads, or plate adapters extend the range of compatible vessels. In many laboratories, benchtop units with digital speed control and built-in timers are standard, sometimes including safety features such as anti-splash covers or automatic stop on overload.

Usage with volatile or hazardous liquids is cautioned, as aerosols can be generated. Sealed containers should be opened before vortexing, and incompatible materials should be avoided. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the platform and adapters help prevent cross-contamination and wear.
