Vorlauf

Vorlauf, also known as the pre-treatment tank or the pre-filtration chamber, is a component of a water treatment system, specifically designed for swimming pools and other aquatic facilities. Its primary function is to remove larger floating items, such as leaves and debris, from the water before it enters the main filtration system.

The Vorlauf typically consists of a small stationary or automatic tank that sits at the entry point of the filtration system. It collects water from the pool and stores it temporarily before allowing it to flow into the main filter or skimmer. This allows for a preliminary filtration process to occur, ensuring that the main filter is not clogged by larger particles.

In a traditional Vorlauf setup, a valve is used to divert water from the pool onto the top of the tank, where it enters a resting period before flowing into the skimmer or main filter. This process enables the floaters and large particles to sink to the bottom of the tank, and subsequently, the cleaner water can approach the intake area. There are different types of Vorlauf systems available, including automatic ones that can be equipped with kinetic sensors or vacuum systems.

Regular cleaning and maintenance of the Vorlauf are essential for efficient pool operation and to prevent clogging of the main filtration system. It should be drained, cleaned, and refilled on a regular basis, typically depending on usage and size of the pool. Additionally, owners might consider getting clean-out ports for easy and quick emptying whenever needed.

The purpose of the Vorlauf is crucial for letting the pre-treated pool water flow gently into the main filter while slowing down the rate of water through the filter itself, shielding it from the heavier solid particles.
