Vorabbildung

Vorabbildung is a German term that denotes an early or rough representation of a concept, intended to aid understanding, evaluation, and further development before detailed design or production. The word combines vor- (before) and Abbildung (depiction, image). In German-speaking professions the concept encompasses quick sketches, models, mood boards, wireframes, and other preliminary visualizations used to communicate ideas and test feasibility.

In product and industrial design, Vorabbildung includes sketches, digital rough renders, foam or cardboard maquettes, and simple 3D models. These representations help designers explore form, proportions, ergonomics, and user interactions, and they facilitate discussions with clients, engineers, and manufacturers without committing substantial resources.

In architecture and urban planning, Vorabbildung appears as schematic drawings, massing studies, or concept models that establish spatial relationships, scale, and the overall concept. In film, television, and game development, the term aligns with previs (previsualization): storyboards, animatics, and rough sequences that plan shots, timing, and storytelling before production begins.
