Vooringang

Vooringang is a rarely encountered term in Dutch and does not form part of standard modern Dutch vocabulary. In most contemporary contexts the common expressions for an entrance at the front of a building are hoofdingang (main entrance) or voordeur (front door), while ingang serves as a general term for an entrance.

Etymology and usage

Vooringang appears to be a compound of voor- (in front) and ingang (entrance). Because it is not widely accepted or documented in standard dictionaries, it is generally regarded as nonstandard, obsolete, or regional. In many cases where vooringang appears in older texts, it is thought to be a variant spelling, a typographical error, or an optical character recognition (OCR) mistake for vooringang or hoofdingang. Some historical documents may preserve orthographic forms that differ from today’s norm, but such instances are relatively rare and not representative of current usage.

Context and guidance

When vooringang is seen in archival material, care should be taken to verify the intended meaning from surrounding text or from more established terms. For modern writing, it is advisable to replace vooringang with hoofdingang or voordeur depending on whether the reference is to the main entrance or the door to a building’s front area.
