Voltammetrywhile

Voltammetrywhile is a proposed concept in electrochemistry that describes the integration of voltammetric measurement with real-time data processing and control during an experiment. The term is a neologism and is not yet widely standardized in the scientific literature.

In conventional voltammetry, an electrode potential is varied according to a predefined protocol and the resulting current is recorded for later analysis. Voltammetrywhile envisions a feedback loop in which data streams are analyzed as they are collected, and experimental parameters such as scan rate, waveform shape, potential window, or sampling intervals are adjusted in real time to optimize sensitivity, selectivity, or safety. This approach relies on low-latency measurement hardware and software capable of rapid decision-making based on ongoing results.

Implementation generally requires a fast potentiostat, real-time data processing hardware or software, and reliable communication between sensing elements and control logic. Common voltammetric modes—cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and square-wave voltammetry—can be incorporated into a real-time framework, enabling adaptive experiments that respond to observed electrochemical signals.

Potential applications include in-situ environmental monitoring, corrosion assessment, microfluidic or lab-on-a-chip systems, and biomedical diagnostics where conditions must be tuned on the fly to maintain performance. Limitations include the need for standardized protocols, potential challenges with data quality and reproducibility, and higher demands on instrumentation and software development.
