Vollformatobjektiven

Vollformatobjektiven, also known as full-frame lenses, are designed to cover the image sensor of a full-frame camera. Full-frame sensors, which measure approximately 36mm x 24mm, are the largest standard sensor size used in digital photography and are derived from the dimensions of 35mm film. Lenses specifically designed for these sensors ensure that the entire image circle projected by the lens falls onto the sensor, resulting in the intended field of view and image quality without cropping or vignetting.

When using a full-frame lens on a camera with a smaller sensor, such as an APS-C or Micro Four Thirds camera, the lens will still function, but the image will be cropped. This cropping effect is often referred to as a "crop factor," which effectively magnifies the image and reduces the field of view. Conversely, using a lens designed for a smaller sensor on a full-frame camera will typically result in significant vignetting (darkening of the corners) or a completely black image, as the smaller image circle projected by the lens does not cover the entire larger sensor.

Full-frame lenses are generally known for their ability to produce images with excellent detail, dynamic range, and shallow depth of field. The larger sensor size, combined with the optics of full-frame lenses, allows for superior low-light performance and bokeh. Consequently, full-frame systems are often preferred by professional photographers and serious enthusiasts who require the highest image quality and creative control. However, full-frame lenses tend to be larger, heavier, and more expensive than their APS-C counterparts due to their larger optical elements and more complex construction needed to cover the larger sensor.
