Vogtlescas

Vogtlescas, also known as *Vogtle Electric Generating Plant*, is a nuclear power plant located in Burke County, Georgia, United States. Situated along the Savannah River near Waynesboro, the facility consists of two operating reactors, Vogtle Units 1 and 2, which began commercial operation in 1987 and 1989, respectively. Both units are pressurized water reactors (PWRs) designed by Westinghouse Electric Company and are among the largest nuclear power plants in the United States by net electrical generation capacity.

The plant was originally planned as a four-unit facility, with Vogtle Units 3 and 4 intended to be advanced boiling water reactors (ABWRs). Construction on these two additional units began in the late 1970s but was suspended in the early 1980s due to financial constraints, regulatory challenges, and public opposition. The abandoned Units 3 and 4 were later repurposed for an expansion project known as the Vogtle Expansion Project, which resumed in 2009 with the goal of adding two new AP1000 reactors to the existing plant. This project, completed in 2023, marked the first new nuclear reactors constructed in the U.S. in over four decades.

Vogtle Electric Generating Plant is owned and operated by Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company. The plant provides a significant portion of the electricity for the state of Georgia and contributes to the regional power grid. It has been recognized for its reliability and safety record, adhering to strict federal regulations enforced by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The facility also engages in community outreach programs and supports local economic development through job opportunities and educational initiatives.

Environmental and safety measures are a priority at Vogtle, including advanced containment structures, emergency response plans, and ongoing monitoring of radioactive emissions.
