Visuaalijärjestelmiä, or visual systems, encompass the biological and artificial mechanisms that enable perception of light and interpretation of visual information. In biological organisms, this system begins with the eyes, which capture light and convert it into electrical signals. These signals are then transmitted via the optic nerve to the brain, specifically to the visual cortex, where they are processed into a coherent image. This complex process allows for the recognition of objects, navigation, and interaction with the environment.

Artificial visual systems, often referred to as computer vision, aim to replicate these capabilities in machines. They utilize cameras as the primary input device to capture visual data. This data is then processed by algorithms that can perform a variety of tasks, such as object detection and recognition, image segmentation, motion tracking, and scene understanding. Machine learning, particularly deep learning, has significantly advanced the capabilities of artificial visual systems, enabling them to achieve human-level or even superhuman performance in specific visual tasks.

Applications of visual systems are widespread. Biologically, they are fundamental to the survival and behavior of most animals. Artificially, they are integral to autonomous vehicles, robotics, medical imaging analysis, surveillance, augmented reality, and content moderation. The ongoing development in both biological and artificial visual systems continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in perception and interpretation.
