Viskositeetillä refers to the concept of viscosity, a fundamental property of fluids that describes their resistance to flow. Imagine honey and water; honey is much more viscous than water, meaning it flows more slowly. This resistance arises from the internal friction within the fluid, caused by the cohesive forces between molecules.

Viscosity is typically measured in units of Pascal-seconds (Pa·s) or poise (P). Temperature plays a significant role in viscosity. For liquids, viscosity generally decreases as temperature increases, as the molecules have more kinetic energy to overcome intermolecular forces. Conversely, for gases, viscosity tends to increase with temperature because molecular collisions become more frequent and energetic.

The mathematical relationship describing viscosity is often represented by Newton's law of viscosity, which states that the shear stress within a fluid is directly proportional to the shear rate. Fluids that obey this law are called Newtonian fluids. Many common fluids like water, air, and ethanol are Newtonian. Non-Newtonian fluids, on the other hand, exhibit a viscosity that changes with applied shear stress or shear rate. Examples include ketchup, paint, and blood. Understanding viscosity is crucial in various fields, including engineering, materials science, and biomechanics, influencing everything from lubrication in engines to the flow of blood in arteries.
