Viskoosisuutta, commonly known as viscosity, is a measure of a fluid's resistance to flow. Imagine two fluids, honey and water. Honey flows much more slowly than water, indicating it has a higher viscosity. This resistance arises from the internal friction between the fluid's molecules. As the fluid moves, layers of molecules slide past each other, and the stronger the intermolecular forces, the greater the resistance to this sliding motion.

Viscosity is an important property in many scientific and engineering applications. It influences how liquids are pumped, how lubricants function, and even how quickly a raindrop falls. Temperature plays a significant role in viscosity. For most liquids, viscosity decreases as temperature increases. This is because higher temperatures provide molecules with more kinetic energy, allowing them to overcome intermolecular forces more easily. Conversely, for gases, viscosity generally increases with temperature due to increased molecular collisions.

The SI unit for dynamic viscosity is the Pascal-second (Pa·s). Another common unit is the poise (P), where 1 Pa·s equals 10 poise. Kinematic viscosity, which is dynamic viscosity divided by density, measures how readily a fluid flows under gravity. It is often expressed in units like the square meter per second (m²/s) or the stokes (St). Understanding and quantifying viscosity is crucial for predicting fluid behavior in diverse scenarios, from blood flow in arteries to the spread of oil spills.
