A virusvektori, or viral vector, refers to a modified virus that is used as a delivery mechanism to introduce genetic material into host cells. These vectors are engineered to be safe for use in medical and research applications, often by removing or disabling their ability to replicate or cause disease. The primary purpose of virusvektori is to facilitate gene therapy, where functional genes are inserted into a patient’s cells to treat or prevent genetic disorders, cancers, or other diseases.

Virusvektori are derived from naturally occurring viruses that have been adapted for safe and efficient gene delivery. Common types include adenoviruses, lentiviruses, and adeno-associated viruses (AAVs). Each type has distinct advantages and limitations, such as the size of the genetic payload they can carry, their ability to integrate into the host genome, and their immune response triggers.
