Virtacytometria

Virtacytometria is a term sometimes used to describe the computational or virtual counterpart of cytometry, focusing on the measurement of cellular features within simulated or digitally generated data rather than physical samples. The word blends virtual and cytometry, and it is not universally standardized in the scientific literature.

In practice, virtacytometria may refer to two related concepts: in silico cytometry, where virtual cell populations are analyzed to emulate flow cytometry or imaging cytometry measurements; and the extraction of cytometry-like readouts from real microscopy images, where segmentation and feature extraction produce distributions that resemble traditional cytometry outputs.

Common techniques include automated image segmentation, feature extraction (such as size, shape, intensity, and texture), multivariate analysis, and machine learning-based classification. The use of synthetic data generation and digital twin frameworks is also described to test algorithms or to train models in a controlled, repeatable manner.

Applications of virtacytometria include methodological development and benchmarking of cytometry pipelines, educational tools, and exploratory research in systems biology where physical experiments may be limited or costly. The concept supports in silico experimentation and reproducibility, but its adoption relies on transparent validation, clear methodological definitions, and careful alignment with established cytometry methods.

Status and interpretation: virtacytometria is not a widely recognized standard term; many researchers would describe similar ideas using phrases such as virtual flow cytometry, image cytometry, or digital twins.
