Virhetodennäköisyys, known in English as Bit Error Rate (BER), is a key performance indicator in digital communication systems. It measures the frequency with which errors occur during the transmission of data. Specifically, virhetodennäköisyys is defined as the ratio of the number of erroneous bits to the total number of bits transmitted. A lower virhetodennäköisyys indicates a more reliable communication link.

The presence of errors can be attributed to various factors, including noise in the transmission channel, interference from other signals, and imperfections in the communication hardware. Monitoring and analyzing virhetodennäköisyys is crucial for assessing the performance and quality of digital communication services, including internet connections, mobile networks, and data storage systems.
