Vingmembran

Vingmembran is the thin, flexible tissue that forms the wings of many insects and other arthropods. It is typically translucent and supported by a system of veins, which provide structural integrity and pathways for nerves and hemolymph.

Anatomically, the wing membrane is a thin cuticular sheet secreted by epidermal cells. It consists of a chitin-protein matrix and, in many groups, air-filled spaces that reduce weight. The veins, which are sclerotized, run through the membrane and give shape to the wing while distributing forces during flight. In several orders, additional features such as scales or pigmented cells may lie on or within the membrane, contributing to color and pattern that aid in camouflage or signaling.

Variation across taxa is large. In many orders, the forewings and hindwings are membranous and transparent with visible venation, while in others the hindwings may be reduced or hidden when not in use. In Lepidoptera, scales cover parts of the membrane, creating color patterns. The membrane’s composition and venation influence aerodynamics, wing stiffness, and maneuverability.

Developmentally, vingmembranen arise from wing imaginal discs in holometabolous insects and are formed during metamorphosis. The tissue is subsequently shaped and strengthened through sclerotization and, in some groups, by the addition of scales or hairs.

Taxonomically, patterns of wing venation are important diagnostic characters for many insect groups. Evolutionarily, membranous wings are a key innovation associated with the extensive diversification of hexapods and other arthropods.
