Vindkanalisering, sometimes translated as wind channeling or wind effect, describes a phenomenon where wind speeds increase significantly when flowing through constricted spaces. This occurs in urban environments, natural canyons, and between buildings. As wind encounters obstacles, it is forced to divert and compress, leading to higher velocities in the narrow passages. The magnitude of this effect depends on factors such as the geometry of the constriction, the prevailing wind direction, and the surrounding landscape.

In cities, vindkanalisering can lead to uncomfortable or even dangerous wind conditions at street level. Tall buildings can create narrow corridors that funnel wind, causing pedestrians to be buffeted by strong gusts. This can also impact the performance of wind turbines, making them less efficient in turbulent, channeled wind. Conversely, the principle can be intentionally applied in architectural design to harness wind energy or improve ventilation in specific areas. Understanding vindkanalisering is crucial for urban planning and building design to mitigate negative impacts and optimize the use of wind resources.
