The primary use of vinyl acetate is in the production of polyvinyl acetate (PVA), a polymer that is widely used as an adhesive, particularly in woodworking and for bonding paper and cardboard. PVA is also a key component in latex paints, providing a durable and flexible film. Another important polymer derived from vinyl acetate is polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), which is produced by the hydrolysis of PVA. PVOH has applications in textiles, paper coatings, and as a water-soluble film.

Vinyl acetate can also be copolymerized with other monomers, such as ethylene, to create polymers like ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA). EVA copolymers exhibit properties such as flexibility, toughness, and clarity, making them suitable for use in shoe soles, flexible packaging, and hot-melt adhesives.

Industrially, vinyl acetate is produced through the reaction of ethylene, acetic acid, and oxygen, often catalyzed by palladium. It is a flammable substance and requires careful handling. Due to its importance as a building block for numerous polymers, vinyl acetate is a significant commodity chemical.
