Villuréttingu refers to the Icelandic legal process of settling disputes through a traditional form of mediation known as *villurétta*. This system has historical roots in Icelandic culture and was formally recognized as a legal mechanism in the 19th century, though its origins trace back to the country’s early settlement period. Villuréttingu operates outside the formal court system, relying instead on the collective judgment of a community’s elders or respected individuals, often referred to as *villuréttaþing*.
