Villámcsatorna, literally translating to "lightning channel" in Hungarian, refers to a phenomenon observed during thunderstorms where a visible, illuminated path is created by a lightning strike. This path is not a physical channel in the sense of a solid conduit, but rather a temporary ionization of the air along the trajectory of the electrical discharge.

When a lightning bolt traverses the atmosphere, the immense electrical energy causes the air molecules to become ionized, stripping electrons from their atoms. This ionization creates a plasma, which is a highly conductive state of matter. The plasma glows intensely due to the rapid excitation and subsequent relaxation of the ionized particles, producing the characteristic bright flash of lightning.
