It is a specialized field that bridges communication between Deaf and hearing individuals, or between speakers of different signed languages. A viittomakääntäjä, or sign language interpreter, must possess fluency in both the spoken/written language and the target signed language. This includes not only linguistic competence but also a deep understanding of the cultural nuances and idiomatic expressions of both. The interpretation process involves listening to or reading the source material, comprehending its meaning, and then producing an equivalent message in the target language. This can be done in real-time, as in spoken language interpretation, or through text-based methods.
