This principle is often referred to as "vital force" or "entelechy." Vitalism emerged in the 19th century as a reaction against the materialistic views of the time, particularly those associated with the work of René Descartes and the mechanical philosophy of the Enlightenment.

Proponents of viitamisetika argue that certain biological processes, such as growth, reproduction, and evolution, cannot be fully explained by physical or chemical mechanisms alone. They propose that these processes require an additional, non-physical factor that guides and directs them. This vital force is often seen as a form of teleology, where biological systems have an inherent purpose or direction.

Critics of viitamisetika point out that the concept of vital force is difficult to define and measure, and that it often serves as a convenient explanation for phenomena that are not yet fully understood.
