Viirusehaigus

Viirushaigus is the Estonian term for a viral disease. Viral diseases are caused by viruses, which are tiny infectious agents that replicate only inside the living cells of other organisms. They can infect all types of life forms, from animals and plants to microorganisms.

Symptoms of viral infections vary widely depending on the specific virus and the body part it affects. Common symptoms can include fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, fatigue, and muscle aches. More severe viral infections can lead to pneumonia, meningitis, or other serious conditions. Transmission typically occurs through direct contact with an infected person, or indirectly through contaminated surfaces, airborne droplets from coughing or sneezing, or vectors like insects.

Diagnosis of viral diseases is often based on a patient's symptoms and medical history. In some cases, laboratory tests such as blood tests, swabs, or imaging may be used to confirm the presence of a specific virus. Treatment for viral infections is generally supportive, focusing on relieving symptoms while the body's immune system fights the virus. Antiviral medications exist for certain viral infections, but they are not effective against all viruses. Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections.

Prevention plays a crucial role in managing viral diseases. Vaccination is a highly effective method for preventing many viral illnesses, such as measles, influenza, and COVID-19. Good hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing, can also significantly reduce the spread of viruses.
