The term Viertelfinals (German for "quarter-finals") refers to the stage in a competition or tournament where the remaining participants are reduced from eight to four by way of single-elimination or knockout matches. This stage occurs after the preliminary rounds or group stages, typically following the Achtelfinals (eighth-finals) and preceding the Halbfinals (semifinals). The structure is common in sports, particularly in single-elimination tournaments such as football (soccer), basketball, tennis, and handball, where teams or players are paired based on seeding or draw results.

In many sports governed by FIFA or UEFA, the Viertelfinals mark a critical juncture, as advancing teams or athletes face heightened competition. The format ensures that only the top-performing participants progress, increasing the intensity of matches. For example, in UEFA Champions League football, the Viertelfinals consist of two-legged ties (home-and-away matches) where the winner of each tie advances to the semifinals.
