Viemäröinnillä refers to the system of pipes, structures, and related components used for collecting and transporting wastewater from its source to a treatment facility or disposal site. This system is essential for public health and environmental protection, preventing the spread of diseases and minimizing pollution of water bodies.

The process begins with sanitary sewers, which collect domestic wastewater from homes and businesses, including sewage from toilets, sinks, showers, and washing machines. Industrial wastewater, which may contain more hazardous substances, is often handled separately or pre-treated before entering the public sewer system. Storm sewers, on the other hand, are designed to carry rainwater and snowmelt away from urban areas, typically discharging directly into rivers, lakes, or oceans without treatment.

The collected wastewater flows through a network of underground pipes, usually made of materials like concrete, PVC, or ductile iron. Gravity is the primary force that moves the wastewater, with pipes laid at a slight downward slope. In flatter terrain or where upward flow is needed, pumping stations are used to lift the wastewater to a higher elevation.

Viemäröinnillä systems also include manholes, which provide access for inspection and maintenance of the pipes, and often combined sewer systems, which carry both sewage and stormwater in the same pipes. This can lead to overflows during heavy rainfall, discharging untreated wastewater into the environment. Modern urban planning increasingly favors separate sewer systems to avoid this issue. The final destination for the wastewater is usually a wastewater treatment plant, where it undergoes physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove contaminants before being safely discharged.
