Videonpakkaamista, known in English as video compression, is the process of reducing the size of video files. This is crucial for efficient storage, transmission, and playback of digital video content. Without compression, raw uncompressed video data would be extremely large, making it impractical for most applications.

The core principle behind video compression is to exploit redundancy within the video data. This redundancy can be spatial, meaning similar patterns within a single frame, or temporal, meaning similar content between consecutive frames. Compression algorithms achieve this reduction by encoding information more efficiently.

Common techniques include motion compensation, where the movement of objects between frames is tracked and only the differences are encoded, and transform coding, which converts video data into a frequency domain where less significant information can be discarded. Lossless compression methods preserve all original data but achieve lower compression ratios, while lossy compression methods discard some data to achieve much smaller file sizes, though with a potential loss in quality.

Several video compression standards, or codecs, exist, such as H.264 (AVC), H.265 (HEVC), and VP9. Each standard offers different trade-offs between compression efficiency, quality, and computational complexity. The choice of codec often depends on the intended use, such as streaming, broadcasting, or archival. The ongoing development of video compression technology continues to push the boundaries of efficiency and quality.
