Vickers hardness, also known as Diamond Pyramid Hardness (DPH), is a method of measuring the hardness of a material. It is one of the most common hardness testing methods used across various industries. The test involves indenting the material with a diamond pyramid indenter having a square base and an angle of 136 degrees between opposite faces. The indenter is pressed into the surface of the material with a specific load for a set amount of time.

After the load is removed, the length of the diagonals of the indentation left on the surface is measured. The Vickers hardness number (HV) is calculated using a formula that takes into account the applied load and the average length of the diagonals of the indentation. The formula is HV = 1.854 * (F / d^2), where F is the applied load in kilograms-force and d is the average length of the diagonals in millimeters. Alternatively, the Vickers hardness can be expressed in units of force per unit area (e.g., kgf/mm² or N/mm²).

The Vickers hardness test is highly versatile and can be used to measure the hardness of a wide range of materials, from very soft metals to very hard ceramics. It is particularly useful for testing thin materials or materials with a very hard surface, as the indentation is relatively small and can be made with varying loads. The test is also known for its accuracy and repeatability, making it a reliable method for quality control and material characterization. The choice of load depends on the material being tested, with lighter loads used for softer materials and heavier loads for harder materials.
