Vetyvarastointimenetelmä refers to methods used for storing hydrogen. Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier, but its storage presents significant challenges due to its low volumetric energy density and the properties of the hydrogen molecule. Various approaches are being developed and researched to overcome these challenges.

One common method is compressed gas storage. Hydrogen is stored in high-pressure tanks, typically made of strong materials like composite fibers, at pressures ranging from 350 to 700 bar. This method is relatively straightforward but requires robust and heavy tanks, and energy is consumed during compression.

Another approach is cryogenic liquid storage. Hydrogen is cooled to very low temperatures, below -253 degrees Celsius, to liquefy it. Liquid hydrogen has a much higher energy density than compressed gas, making it suitable for applications where space is limited, such as in vehicles. However, liquefaction is an energy-intensive process, and maintaining the low temperature during storage, known as boil-off, is a continuous challenge.

Material-based storage methods, often referred to as solid-state storage, involve absorbing or adsorbing hydrogen into or onto various materials. Metal hydrides, for example, can chemically bind hydrogen. Other materials like porous carbons or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can physically adsorb hydrogen. These methods often offer higher volumetric storage densities at lower pressures and temperatures compared to compressed gas, but challenges remain in terms of the weight of the materials, the speed of hydrogen uptake and release, and the cost of the storage materials. Research continues to explore novel materials and optimize existing ones for efficient and safe hydrogen storage.
