Vetweefsels, also known as adipose tissue, are a type of connective tissue primarily composed of adipocytes, specialized cells that store energy in the form of fat. These tissues play a crucial role in the human body beyond simple energy storage. They act as an insulator, helping to maintain body temperature, and provide cushioning to protect vital organs.

There are two main types of vetweefsels: white adipose tissue and brown adipose tissue. White adipose tissue is the most abundant type and its primary function is to store energy. It also produces hormones that regulate metabolism and appetite. Brown adipose tissue, found in smaller amounts, is specialized for heat generation. This process, called thermogenesis, is particularly important in newborns and hibernating animals.

The distribution of vetweefsels throughout the body varies. White fat is found subcutaneously, beneath the skin, providing insulation and energy reserves. Visceral fat surrounds internal organs, and while it also stores energy, excess visceral fat is linked to increased health risks. Brown fat is concentrated in areas like the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

The development and function of vetweefsels are influenced by genetics, diet, and physical activity. While essential for survival, an imbalance in adipose tissue accumulation can lead to health issues such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
