Vesivärvipaberid refer to papers specifically designed for use with watercolors. These papers are crucial for achieving desired effects in watercolor painting, as they differ significantly from standard writing or printing papers. The primary characteristic of watercolor paper is its absorbency and weight, which are engineered to handle the wet nature of watercolors without buckling, tearing, or bleeding excessively.

Watercolor papers are typically made from 100% cotton rag or a blend of cotton and cellulose. Cotton fibers are stronger and more absorbent than cellulose, allowing the paper to withstand repeated washes of water and pigment. The weight of watercolor paper is measured in grams per square meter (gsm) or pounds per ream (lb). Common weights include 140lb (300gsm), 200lb (400gsm), and 300lb (640gsm). Heavier papers are more robust and can handle more water and layering without significant distortion.

There are three main types of watercolor paper surfaces: hot-pressed, cold-pressed, and rough. Hot-pressed paper is smooth and pressed with hot rollers, making it ideal for fine detail, dry brush techniques, and precise linework. It absorbs less water than other types. Cold-pressed paper, also known as ‘NOT’ paper, is pressed with cold rollers, creating a slightly textured surface. It is the most versatile and popular type, balancing absorbency with the ability to create subtle textures and blends. Rough paper has a pronounced texture, achieved through less pressing. This surface is excellent for achieving expressive textures, masking fluid effects, and creating a painterly look.

The manufacturing process of watercolor paper also influences its performance. Sizing, a gelatin or synthetic substance added during production, controls the paper's absorbency. It prevents the watercolor pigment from sinking too deeply into the fibers and allows colors to sit on the surface, maintaining their vibrancy. Different brands and paper types will have varying levels of sizing, affecting how the paint behaves. Selecting the right watercolor paper is a fundamental step for any watercolor artist, impacting the final outcome of their artwork.
