Vesipesäkköjä, scientifically known as Hydrozoa, are a class of marine and freshwater animals belonging to the phylum Cnidaria. They are characterized by a complex life cycle that often involves alternating between a sessile polyp stage and a free-swimming medusa stage. This alternation is not universal, with some species exhibiting only one of these forms or having variations in the cycle.

Polyps are typically small, tubular structures that attach to a substrate. They can live solitarily or form colonies, which may be simple or highly specialized. Colonial hydrozoans can exhibit polymorphism, with different individuals within the colony adapted for feeding, reproduction, or defense. The medusa stage, commonly known as a jellyfish, is usually bell-shaped and free-swimming, propelled by contractions of its bell.

Feeding in hydrozoans is carnivorous. They use specialized stinging cells called nematocysts, located on their tentacles, to capture small invertebrates and plankton. Digestion occurs in a gastrovascular cavity. Reproduction can be asexual, through budding or fission, or sexual, with the production of gametes. The larval stage, often a planula, is typically free-swimming and eventually settles to develop into a new polyp.

Hydrozoans inhabit a wide range of aquatic environments, from shallow coastal waters to the deep sea, and some species are found in freshwater. They play a role in marine ecosystems as both predators and prey. Some notable examples of hydrozoans include the Portuguese man o' war (Physalia physalis), hydras (freshwater polyps), and the small jellyfish groups like Obelia. Their diverse forms and life strategies make them a fascinating group within the animal kingdom.
