Vesipalloja

Vesipalloja, meaning water balloons in Finnish, are small, flexible bags designed to be filled with water for play. They are typically made from latex or rubber and come in various sizes, though most common models are thin-walled and designed to break easily on impact.

Derived from vesipallo (water ball) with the plural suffix -ja, vesipalloja are used in Finland as in many other countries during warm weather. Water balloons became widely popular in the mid-20th century in Western countries; in Finland they are a common summer toy, often sold in seasonal stores and supermarkets.

Most commercial vesipalloja are single-use latex products sold in bundles that must be tied by hand after filling. Some modern variants are designed to be more durable or to seal automatically; there are also biodegradable options made from natural latex that degrade more quickly in the environment. Reusable water-filled balloons are alternatives to reduce waste.

Typical use is playful water combat and games such as toss or target practice. Safety considerations include avoiding throwing at faces or animals and ensuring children are supervised. Latex fragments can pose choking or ingestion hazards for young children. Environmental concerns focus on litter and wildlife risk; many communities discourage or regulate water-balloon use, encouraging biodegradable products or alternatives like water blasters or water balloons that can be collected after use.
