The form derives from verze (version) with the suffix -ovací, indicating the action or domain of versioning. In practice, verziovací encompasses workflows, policies, and techniques that track changes, maintain history, support rollback, and enable collaboration.

Common domains include software development (source code management and release engineering), data management (dataset versioning and data lake governance), and content publishing (editions of documents or media). A versioning system typically uses a version numbering scheme, such as semantic versioning (major.minor.patch), calendar-based versioning, or custom schemes; it may implement commits, diffs, snapshots, tags, and branches.
