Vertailuongelmia is a concept used to describe the problems that arise when comparing results, measurements, or outcomes across different contexts, instruments, or populations. While not a formal methodological category, it is widely discussed in Finnish-language literature on data analysis, evaluation, and policy assessment as a concise label for comparability barriers.

The term blends vertailu (comparison) and ongelmia (problems). It emerged in discussions of cross-context assessment, where researchers note that direct comparisons can be misleading if underlying conditions differ.

Key challenges include differences in measurement scales and units, non-equivalent constructs, variations in sampling frames or timing, mode effects, translation or cultural interpretation, and missing data. Additional complications arise when statistical models assume a common baseline or when regressing results from heterogeneous populations, leading to biased estimates or misinterpreted effect sizes. These factors can hinder synthesis, such as meta-analyses, and obscure true relationships.
