Verständigung

Verständigung is a German noun meaning mutual understanding reached through communication. It denotes both the process of aligning meanings, intentions, and norms among speakers and the outcome in which participants act on a shared interpretation.

In daily life, Verständigung occurs in conversations, negotiations, and mediations. It requires more than exchanging information; it involves aligning assumptions, acknowledging others' perspectives, and resolving ambiguities. In intercultural and multilingual settings, it can be challenged by language differences, cultural norms, and divergent expectations, making active listening and clarification important.

In philosophy and social theory, Verständigung has a normative dimension. Jürgen Habermas treats verbal communication as the basis of a rational, democratic order: through discourse in conditions approximating an ideal speech situation, participants can reach understanding and legitimize claims. This leads to concepts such as Verstandigungsethik, an ethics oriented toward achieving consensus and inclusive dialogue, rather than manipulation. The process emphasizes reasoned argument, sincerity, and the willingness to revise one's views in light of better reasons.
