Verolis

Verolis is a coastal city-state in the Nyra archipelago on the continent of Valoria. Located along the Verolis Strait opposite the mainland, it began as a ninth-century trading post and grew into a major port. It maintains a fortified harbor, stone quays, and granaries that anchor regional commerce.

The natural harbor is sheltered by two headlands and linked to inland districts by canals and a southern river. The old town is ringed by a historic wall; modern neighborhoods spread inland. The temperate climate features wet winters and dry summers that support markets and craft production.

Verolis expanded as a trade relay point. A 1185 charter granted local self-government, and it achieved limited independence in the 14th century. Its fortunes rose with the silk and spice trades, with periods of occupation by rival powers. In the 18th century it joined the Valorian Confederation and adopted a constitutional framework.

The economy centers on shipping, shipbuilding, and crafts, with fisheries and small-scale wine production. The annual Verolis Market Festival draws merchants and visitors. Verolan is spoken locally, while Common is used in administration and education. The city is known for masonry, carpentry, and seafood cuisine.

Verolis is governed by a unicameral council and a governor appointed from among council members. Population is about 100,000 to 120,000, predominantly Verolan-speaking, with minority communities. The city maintains civic archives, public museums, and a tradition of municipal volunteerism.
